Archives & Special Collections collects, cares for and makes accessible the unique and distinctive collections of Liverpool Hope University. The collections contain material of widely differing form, from rare printed books, medieval manuscripts, microfiche and microfilm, personal correspondence, and pamphlets, to photographs, sound archives and artefacts.
Archives & Special Collections hold archives relating to the history of the university and founding colleges; St. Katharine’s College (formerly Warrington Training College), the Sisters of Notre Dame Mount Pleasant Training College, Christ’s College and the federation of the three colleges becoming Liverpool Institute of Higher Education (LIHE) in 1979.
Other collection strengths include: Social reform in Victorian Liverpool; child emigration to Canada; history of education; the book as material culture; the introduction of the printing press; history of religions and missionary activity; liturgy during the Reformation; recusant history in the North West; early Bible translations and commentaries; Roman Catholic studies and Vatican II.
The Archives & Special Collections Reading Room is based in The Sheppard-Worlock Library at Hope Park and is accessible to students, researchers and interested members of the public alike. We seek to acquire by gift, bequest, or loan, material that enhances the teaching and research activities of the university and enriches our heritage collections held in trust for future generations.
